Today is a day of remembrance. Things you saw, where you were, what you said.

We owe it to ourselves and the people we lost to remember this day for more than the pain that was inflicted 10 years ago. It serves as a reminder of the importance and preciousness of each of our lives.

I offer you three thoughts, each one from my favorite show – Star Trek.

How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life. – Captain James Kirk

What we leave behind is as important as how we’ve lived. – Captain Jean Luc Picard

And finally, the words I live by. The ones I think are so important to who and what we are:

In this galaxy there’s a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all that, and perhaps more…only one of each of us. -Dr. McCoy

It is so very important that we remember each day that we, each and every one of us, have the capability of creating a unique and lasting impression on the world. Each day you’re alive, you’re building a legacy.

Make it a great one.

I’m a bad Blog host. I show up, rant for days, and then disappear into the fray. I’m working on that – the last few weeks I’ve been keeping a lot to myself.

About a year ago someone said, “I don’t think people follow your blog as closely as you think they do.” It halted me in my tracks. I write for me, to be sure, but suddenly, I didn’t have a voice; in my mind, I didn’t have anything to say that people would want to read.

So, I retreated – I stopped working for myself and lost that feeling that I was the Captain, the guy who took charge and led the way. And for eight months, I had some really good times and some really bad times. I was doing good work, but I wasn’t making a difference and my confidence wasn’t coming back.

There’s a scene – and this will seem silly to you non-Trekkies out there – in Star Trek: Generations where Captain Kirk and Captain Picard meet. I’ve included it below; it’s something I think about every day.

Transcript:
Kirk: Maybe it’s about that empty chair on the bridge of the Enterprise. Ever since I left Starfleet, I haven’t made a difference. Captain of the Enterprise, eh?
Picard: That’s right.
Kirk: Close to retirement?
Picard: I’m not planning on it.
Kirk: Let me tell you something – don’t. Don’t let them promote you. Don’t let them transfer you. Don’t let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you’re there, you can make a difference.

I eventually realized that I don’t work well while standing in someone else’s shadow. My confidence wouldn’t come back because I’d done good work – I had to get my hands dirty and make things happen for myself. I decided that I’d quit that job on Xmas day – and did.

The last two months have been intensely introspective. I started to rebuild my confidence and sense of leadership, and started looking toward the future. I became The Geek Superhero – and did everything I could to live up to that title. I re-built my business; started right. Fixing a lot of the mistakes I made along the way last time. Built up a client base to provide a tight, but livable income.

A lot of the projects I put on hold for the last year are on my mind along with some new ones. The Digital Gunslingers. PodCamp Fort Collins 2. CareerCamp. Psychotic Resumes… TEDxFoCo.

I can’t do it alone, but I’m confident that I can lead the way. It’s time to make a difference – and I’ll stand with you if you feel the same way.

Seth Godin came out with a blog post about what you should do on your birthday. I like the idea of turning an ordinarily “selfish” day into a day of giving back.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any money to organize anything. And I don’t have much to share that doesn’t come from my mind. But – when I think about it, the one thing that I would really want to share with everybody is Star Trek.

I talk a LOT about Star Trek. I credit a lot of the way I am to Star Trek and the lessons it taught me. So, if you want to help me celebrate my birthday – go find an episode of Star Trek (I don’t care which series, but The Next Generation is my favorite) and enjoy it! If you don’t have access to a nerdy family member or a stockpile of Paramount’s ridiculously overpriced DVDs, you can watch random episodes for free on Justin.tv by searching for “Star Trek”.

Or, you know, if Star Trek is not your thing – you could always help me pay rent by signing up for one of my Facebook or Online Reputation Management classes, or the WTF!?

***Spoiler Warning***

I went to go see the new Star Trek movie – twice. Once on a regular screen and once on an IMAX screen – and I loved it both times. As a Trekkie, I was definitely satisfied – but as a hobbiest Star Trek writer, I was a little disturbed.

My #1 hobby is writing Star Trek audio drama, so I was left with questions about the consequences of the new Star Trek movie on the older canon. One of the golden rules of writing for Star Trek has always been to put your toys away when you’re done playing. That is, you need to write a “close-loop” episode (or season, series, etc.) that effectively puts the Star Trek universe back where it was before you started writing. Anything you break needs to be fixed (First Contact), anything you create kinda disappears (Insurrection), and anyone major you kill needs to somehow find a way back (Search for Spock).

It looks like J.J. Abrams has -temporarily- suspended this rule.

*** Spoilers Begin Here ***

Consequence #1 – Things Will Break, People Will Die, and We’re Okay With That

Every somewhat versed Trekkie had a moment of acknowledgment when the major characters started discussing the Alternate Reality hypothesis. Spock’s “Whatever course our lives might have taken before…” line. That was J.J. Abrams telling us that this was *his* universe. The candy buttons, single, centered view screen, and cold brushed steel of the other timeline don’t exist here.

You might have noticed there’s also a black hole where Vulcan used to be. Not only is that a major tourism killer, but the fact that J.J.’s writers either didn’t care to – or haven’t yet decided to – set things right and repair Vulcan or the timeline means that the old rules just don’t apply anymore. Major players can be taken out. If they were able to destroy Vulcan without a second thought, imagine what perils this could mean for our favorite characters.

Consequence #2 – Back Home, Spock is Gone!

I’m of the opinion that the warm and fuzzy canon we’ve come to know and love still exists as a parallel universe to the one J.J. Abrams created. There are plenty of supporting examples for this (TNG: Parallels) and I don’t think J.J. Abrams’s intent was to “kill off” existing canon. As a functional way to bring back The Original Series cast as well as tell new and compelling stories without having the ending already known, the Alternate Universe thing was a great way to do it.

In fact, the major pieces supporting my theory that things can live hunky-dory side-by-side is that Spock made absolutely no attempt to correct the timeline. Generally when someone breaks the timeline, Starfleet Officers take it upon themselves to set it right at any cost. He never mentioned fixing the timeline to Kirk, he didn’t travel back with him to help (young) Spock re-capture the future Vulcan ship with the Red Matter, or any other lengths we’ve seen Starfleet Officers go to to set things right. Picard with the Borg in First Contact, Kirk and Spock with McCoy in the TOS episode Guardian of Forever, and so on. That Spock failed to do anything to set it right in this case seems a little mysterious – unless there’s some secret dynamics of Red Matter that we’re not aware of – or perhaps more character driven – that Spock could not bear the thought of a universe – even a parallel universe – without Vulcan.

But for the folks back home, in the old universe, Spock is friggin’ gone. Which also means…

Consequence #3 – Back Home, Romulus is Destroyed!

The reason Nero went on his killing spree – Spock failed to save Romulus from the supernova. So now we’re short a Spock and the Romulan Empire is without a homeworld. Do you need a moment for that to sink in? I know I did. Romulus, in our nice, fuzzy and familiar timeline, is destroyed.

As a writer, I have to live with that – unless I want to create my own Alternate Universe. I kinda did with Dimensions – I put the story in the Mirror Universe, set in a period that we’ve know nothing about. Even so, if my characters ever make it back home, they’re living in a universe where Romulus is doomed.

Star Trek: Remixed

This is all an assumption. We could posit that Spock (the old one) wasn’t actually from our warm and fuzzy familiar canon universe, but yet another alternate universe – and the same for Nero. For all we know, in the warm and fuzzy familiar canon universe, Spock could have saved Romulus and Nero went on happily as a married miner.

As a long-time Trekkie and Trek writer, though – I feel like maybe warm and fuzzy isn’t where Trek should be anymore. My fiction is definitely darker for a reason – I don’t think Warm and Fuzzy is where the world is at anymore. People can’t identify with that. Let’s take some risks. Let’s blow up some planets and do some things that aren’t so safe with our favorites. If we miss ‘em, we’ve got the warm and fuzzy universe on our DVDs and VHS tapes, but now we also have this new playground to play on… and a few more fans who’ll want to play too!

Cinco-De-Friggin-Mayo, baby.

Being that this is the month of amazing movies and the best non-US holiday ever (besides Boxing Day, eh?), give yourself a break from studying something too intense and go live at the theater, would ya?

Seriously. X-Men Origins (GAMBIT! WOO!), Star Trek, Angels and Demons, Terminator, Night at the Museum… why are you still reading this!?

Okay, okay. If you really have to have something millennial-esque and important to read, check this out: Al Duncan, the self-proclaimed Millennial Mentor. If his amazingly posh use of the color purple doesn’t wow you, his articles surely will. Well researched and thought out, Al has set himself up in prime position to be a huge ally.

Oh, and this:

Uh… I don’t think the Black Eyed Peas count as millennials, but a lot of us do like their music, and Will.I.Am is awesome in X-Men. So, why not?

I’ll be better next month.

It is totally, utterly, and unabashedly your fault that you aren't where you want to be. The caveat is that life isn't always fair; it is only human to make no mistakes and still fail. I learned that from Star Trek.

Admittedly, I may not be the first one to think about this…

The other day, I was reading over my friend’s resume – he graduated college this year and has yet to find a career position. He’s got a stable job at a decent company. Unfortunately, you have to use that filthy R-word to explain what he does. Retail.

Well, okay. Retail really isn’t a dirty word. But it is to him – because he has a four-year bachelor of science degree, damnit. See, the problem is that his goals are set a lot higher than his current job. He has aspirations that he knows he can achieve, because, after all – he DID go through all that work of getting a degree. So, why isn’t he where he thinks he should be?

Now, this isn’t his fault – career centers, parental advice and job fair preparations can only go so far. The job market is fickle, right? There’s no growth in the economy right now. It’s a seasonal career. Right?

Maybe. Not really.

It is his fault, you know? He needs to know this stuff just as much as I needed to know it when I was in his position – back when it was my fault. And it WAS my fault – until I learned better. Admitting you have a problem… sucks is half the battle. You have to admit it or you’ll never get better. It is totally, utterly, and unabashedly your fault that you aren’t where you want to be. The caveat is that life isn’t always fair; it is only human to make no mistakes and still fail. I learned that from Star Trek.

Anyway, my friend is not the only one to blame, either.

I have read a LOT of resumes and cover letters, of college students as well as people well into the middle of their careers. I’ve listened to interview techniques from people twenty years older than me – and cringed at what I’ve heard. These aren’t dumb people. My friend certainly isn’t dumb – he can run circles around me any day. They have their own four year degrees, or ten years of experience, or whatever. They really just don’t know that what they’ve been doing was wrong.

I know there’s a better way – and usually my advice, when heeded, is rewarded with better pay, a better position, a first job, a landed interview… It is only logical: a better resume, a stronger cover letter, an aced interview – these are the things that get you where you want to go.

So, I’ve created this blog in hopes that I can spread my advice to the masses. Or, at least to you. Hopefully we’ll both learn something in the process!
